* t/test-lib: wire up NO_ICONV prerequisitePatrick Steinhardt2024-10-161-0/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The iconv library is used by Git to reencode files, commit messages and other things. As such it is a rather integral part, but given that many platforms nowadays use UTF-8 everywhere you can live without support for reencoding in many situations. It is thus optional to build Git with iconv, and some of our platforms wired up in "config.mak.uname" disable it. But while we support building without it, running our test suite with "NO_ICONV=Yes" causes many test failures. Wire up a new test prerequisite ICONV that gets populated via our GIT-BUILD-OPTIONS. Annotate failing tests accordingly. Note that this commit does not do a deep dive into every single test to assess whether the failure is expected or not. Most of the tests do smell like the expected kind of failure though. Signed-off-by: Patrick Steinhardt <ps@pks.im> Signed-off-by: Taylor Blau <me@ttaylorr.com>
* revision: always store allocated strings in output encodingPatrick Steinhardt2024-06-071-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The `git_log_output_encoding` variable can be set via the `--encoding=` option. When doing so, we conditionally either assign it to the passed value, or if the value is "none" we assign it the empty string. Depending on which of the both code paths we pick though, the variable may end up being assigned either an allocated string or a string constant. This is somewhat risky and may easily lead to bugs when a different code path may want to reassign a new value to it, freeing the previous value. We already to this when parsing the "i18n.logoutputencoding" config in `git_default_i18n_config()`. But because the config is typically parsed before we parse command line options this has been fine so far. Regardless of that, safeguard the code such that the variable always contains an allocated string. While at it, also free the old value in case there was any to plug a potential memory leak. * tests: teach callers of test_i18ngrep to use test_grepJunio C Hamano2023-11-021-4/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | They are equivalents and the former still exists, so as long as the only change this commit makes are to rewrite test_i18ngrep to test_grep, there won't be any new bug, even if there still are callers of test_i18ngrep remaining in the tree, or when merged to other topics that add new uses of test_i18ngrep. This patch was produced more or less with git grep -l -e 'test_i18ngrep ' 't/t[0-9][0-9][0-9][0-9]-*.sh' | xargs perl -p -i -e 's/test_i18ngrep /test_grep /' and a good way to sanity check the result yourself is to run the above in a checkout of c4603c1c (test framework: further deprecate test_i18ngrep, 2023-10-31) and compare the resulting working tree contents with the result of applying this patch to the same commit. You'll see that test_i18ngrep in a few t/lib-*.sh files corrected, in addition to the manual reproduction. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When squashing commit messages the squash!/fixup! subjects are not of interest so comment them out to stop them becoming part of the final message. This change breaks a bunch of --autosquash tests which rely on the "squash! <subject>" line appearing in the final commit message. This is addressed by adding a second line to the commit message of the "squash! ..." commits and testing for that. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | On musl libc, ISO-2022-JP encoder is too eager to switch back to 1 byte encoding, musl's iconv always switch back after every combining character. Comparing glibc and musl's output for this command $ sed q t/t3900/ISO-2022-JP.txt| iconv -f ISO-2022-JP -t utf-8 | iconv -f utf-8 -t ISO-2022-JP | xxd glibc: 00000000: 1b24 4224 4f24 6c24 5224 5b24 551b 2842 .$B$O$l$R$[$U.(B 00000010: 0a . musl: 00000000: 1b24 4224 4f1b 2842 1b24 4224 6c1b 2842 .$B$O.(B.$B$l.(B 00000010: 1b24 4224 521b 2842 1b24 4224 5b1b 2842 .$B$R.(B.$B$[.(B 00000020: 1b24 4224 551b 2842 0a .$B$U.(B. Although musl iconv's output isn't optimal, it's still correct. From commit 7d509878b8, ("pretty.c: format string with truncate respects logOutputEncoding", 2014-05-21), we're encoding the message to utf-8 first, then format it and convert the message to the actual output encoding on git commit --squash. Thus, t3900::test_commit_autosquash_flags is failing on musl libc. Reencode to utf-8 before arranging rebase's todo list. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When cleaning up files in the $HOME directory, it really makes sense to quote the path, especially in Git's test suite, where the HOME directory is *guaranteed* to contain spaces in its name. It would appear that those two tests pass even without cleaning up the files, but really more by pure chance than by design (the cleanup seems not actually to be necessary). However, if anybody would have a left-over `trash/` directory in Git's `t/` directory, these tests would fail, because they would all of a sudden try to delete that directory, but without the `-r` (recursive) flag. * commit_tree(): refuse commit messages that contain NULsNguyễn Thái Ngọc Duy2011-12-151-0/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Current implementation sees NUL as terminator. If users give a message with NUL byte in it (e.g. editor set to save as UTF-16), the new commit message will have NULs. However following operations (displaying or amending a commit for example) will not keep anything after the first NUL. Stop user right when they do this. If NUL is added by mistake, they have their chance to fix. Otherwise, log messages will no longer be text "git log" and friends would grok. * t3900: do not reference numbered arguments from the test scriptJohannes Sixt2011-08-111-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The call to test_expect_success is nested inside a function, whose arguments the test code wants to access. But it is not specified that any unexpanded $1, $2, $3, etc in the test code will access the surrounding function's arguments. Rather, they will access the arguments of the function that happens to eval the test code. In this case, the reference is intended to supply '-m message' to a call of 'git commit --squash'. Remove it because -m is optional and the test case does not check for it. There are tests in t7500 that check combinations of --squash and -m. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Some old iconv implementations do not have many alternate names and/or do not match character encoding names case insensitively. These implementations can not tell that utf-8 and UTF-8 are the same encoding and fail when trying to do the conversion. So use the old names, which modern implementations still support. The following conversions were performed: utf-8 --> UTF-8 ISO-8859-1 --> ISO8859-1 EUCJP --> eucJP Also update t9129 and t9500 which make use of the test files in t/t3900. * t3900: ISO-2022-JP has more than one popular variantsJunio C Hamano2009-05-121-2/+16
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When converting from other encodings (e.g. EUC-JP or UTF-8), there are subtly different variants of ISO-2022-JP, all of which are valid. At the end of line or when a run of string switches to 1-byte sequence, ESC ( B can be used to switch to ASCII or ESC ( J can be used to switch to ISO 646:JP (JIS X 0201) but they essentially are the same character set and are used interchangeably. Similarly the set ESC $ @ switches to (JIS X 0208-1978) and ESC $ B switches to (JIS X 0208-1983) are in practice used interchangeably. Depending on the iconv library and the locale definition on the system, a program that converts from another encoding to ISO-2022-JP can produce different byte sequence, and GIT_TEST_CMP (aka "diff -u") will report the difference as a failure. Fix this by converting the expected and the actual output to UTF-8 before comparing when the end result is ISO-2022-JP. The test vector string in t3900/ISO-2022-JP.txt is expressed with ASCII and JIS X 0208-1983, but it can be expressed with any other possible variant, and when converted back to UTF-8, these variants produce identical byte sequences. |/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Many test scripts assumed that they will start in a 'trash' subdirectory that is a single level down from the t/ directory, and referred to their test vector files by asking for files like "../t9999/expect". This will break if we move the 'trash' subdirectory elsewhere. To solve this, we earlier introduced "$TEST_DIRECTORY" so that they can refer to t/ directory reliably. This finally makes all the tests use it to refer to the outside environment. * UTF-8: introduce i18n.logoutputencoding.Junio C Hamano2006-12-281-0/+104
It is plausible for somebody to want to view the commit log in a different encoding from i18n.commitencoding -- the project's policy may be UTF-8 and the user may be using a commit message hook to run iconv to conform to that policy (and either not have i18n.commitencoding to default to UTF-8 or have it explicitly set to UTF-8). Even then, Latin-1 may be more convenient for the usual pager and the terminal the user uses. The new variable i18n.logoutputencoding is used in preference to i18n.commitencoding to decide what encoding to recode the log output in when git-log and friends formats the commit log message.
